Ergonomic Workbenches

Ergonomic means to fit one's tools, environment, and even job, to the needs, strengths and capabilities of people, of the human body. Ergonomics is simply human engineering, and every workbench can, and should be, an ergonomic workbench.

Many offices are going ergonomic, designing their desks, computers, and chairs in order to increase productivity and decrease work-related stresses. It's cut down on carpal tunnel syndrome and other injuries. Wireless headsets keep you from crunching your neck to keep the phone pressed between shoulder and ear. Cars now put their cup holders within easy reach, and allow us to make adjustments without taking attention off the road. This is ergonomics. Without even knowing it, you may have already been working toward an ergonomic workspace at your own garage workbench.

Ergonomic workbenches are simply good workbenches
A good home workbench is one which provides you a safe, comfortable, convenient workspace, allowing you to focus on the job at hand. This is also an ergonomic workbench. The best example might be the table's height. It should fit its owner, allowing him or her to work comfortably, without having to bend over too low or reach too far. The job should be efficient, not awkward. A good clamp can hold an item securely, as humans don't have three hands.

An ergonomic work bench also means safety. A design built for the human body means you'll be unlikely to be caught out of position, or at less than full strength, or prone to long-term stress to the body. An ergonomic workbench keeps the job in front of you, has all the materials you'll need within easy reach. It just makes sense. A lack of focus can mean mistakes. And awkwardness can mean injury - either immediately, or eventually, over the long haul.

Not just a trend, but the law
Because of this, ergonomics in the workplace is not just a trend, but became part of federal law during the Clinton administration.

Specific ergonomic workbenches
These days, you'll find several workbenches on the market specifically called "ergonomic." These are sure to have several helpful ergonomic features, such as adjustable work surfaces, and the ability to configure their dimensions to your body. These are great additions. But every wooden workbench should be comfortable, efficient, and safe. Every good wooden workbench is, by definition, an ergonomic workbench.
